Today's ramblings
These days, a lot of people just refer to me as "that karaoke lady." Which is kind of true, but mostly I think of my life as something a bit more, um, expansive.
My background is in music, theatre, advertising and writing. So when I came to Chapala in 1979, to help my husband Lonny create a martial arts temple, producing shows seemed like the natural thing to do.
Over the years here, I've produced hundreds of shows. Some were full-out musicals (like our groundbreaking "My Fair Lady" production at the Auditorio) and some were stageplays (like the ever-popular "Greater Tuna," slated again for 2009) and some were concerts. I also worked in several shows at the Lakeside Little Theatre, my favorites being Luisa in "The Fantastiks," and the leads in "Miracle Worker" and "Proof." It's been fun.
I call my company Circle Productions. At the moment, I host the Open Mike Club, a karaoke group that meets at La Bodega restaurant in Ajijic every Monday evening, except the last (376-766-1002). Every last Monday of each month, we mount the OMC Talent Showcase, a hugely successful talent show, also at La Bodega.
I also get to sing with The Doo Wops, a local quartet that performs 50s and 60s top hits exclusively (click here and scroll down). And I often gig around town, probably best-known as part of "Wonderful World Trio," from La Tasca.
Once in a while, Circle will produce a special show or a benefit, such as "Smile! From Mexico with Love," which you can view memorialized on this page. (The other two videos are pretty much representative of what I'm doing right now.)
Life is grand.
